ABSL has an array of space qualified space cells, four of which have now flown powering spacecraft and launch vehicles. In addition to offering these proven heritage cells, ABSL continues to invest in the space qualification of new cells to increase performance. This paper discusses the space qualification of the ABSL 18650NL cell. Typically, the best battery level density that has been achieved in the space industry has been just below 130Wh/kg. However, the ABSL 18650NL cell has a cell level energy density of 190Wh/kg so that expected space battery energy density is 150Wh/kg using the proven ABSL battery architecture. The tests that have been performed are discussed together with a comparison to gauge technology readiness compared to the ABSL 18650HC. |
