The Li2MnO3-LiMO2 (M=Mn, Co, Ni) materials system is an attractive Li-ion cathode given its high specific capacity of upwards of 240 – 280 mAh/g between 4.8V – 2V. However, these cathode materials are somewhat rate limited with comparatively low cycle life relative to other cathodes such as LiNi(1-x)CoxO2. In order to better understand the characteristics of this cathode system and its viability for use in high specific energy Li-ion battery cells, we have conducted a number of materials and electrochemical characterization studies. These studies are being conducted in order to optimize the cathode material to meet the NASA targeted goal of 280 mAh/g between 4.8V – 3V at a C/2 discharge rate at 0oC. The effects of discharge rate, cutoff voltage, operational temperature, and compositional variations will be presented for two electrode coin cells and three electrode spiral wound cells. |
