Abstract   TDA Research is developing carbon/silicon composite anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries based on our patented pore size engineering technology. We demonstrated ~1500 mAh/g specific energy of the C/Si composite anodes, five times greater than conventional graphite anodes. We also showed the carbon matrix stabilized the Si for capacity fade. The C/Si composites can be made with irreversible capacities that are no larger than those of commercial hard carbon anodes (~ 25% of initial charge capacity).
